Use of Basic Shapes - Donkey Kong

For this project I was tasked with selecting a character from Super Smash Bros. for the Nintendo 64. We were told to select a character and use basic shapes in order to characterize them purely by their shape language and proportions.

I decided for this project to do Donkey Kong for no other reason other than that I was wearing a Donkey Kong shirt that day. I used a reference of Donkey Kong I found from the movie and then broke it down into basic shapes. This was the reference I used.

Using that reference, I made a 3D model in Blender using basic shapes of Donkey Kong holding some barrels over his head like he's going to throw them towards the camera.

After talking with my instructor, Nick, he told me that I should make the lightning and shading more noticeable, I did this by cranking up the specular on the model and darkening the colors, rendering again and getting these as the result.

Finally I used these new models with the higher specular to do a paint over in some sections that I didn't think popped enough and got this model sheet as my final result.

3D Simple Sprite Project - Alucard

For this project I was tasked with creating a sprite in 3D using cubes in Unreal Engine 5. I made a beveled cube in Maya and decided to use Alucard from Castlevania: Symphony of the Night since that game has some of the most stunning sprite I've ever seen in a game. After a couple hours placing cubes in the right places and assigning them materials with the right color, roughness and metallic values, this was the result.

I had a little extra time and decided my new work laptop needed a good wallpaper background so I took this sprite and made a voxel lamppost with point lights within the blueprint. Then I did some of my own custom pixel art and put it on planes within Unreal Engine 5 to make myself a cool little Castlevania scene featuring my sprite.

2D Art First Post!

I began my art journey with 2D art fairly recently actually. I've always had a passion for 3D art since my early teen years but I didn't discover a fondness for drawing and illustrating until I ended up attending the Savannah College of Art and Design where everyone is able to draw. Seeing all my new friends participate in drawing sessions and being able to quickly put their ideas down on paper inspired me to learn to do the same. Eventually I became so passionate about drawing that I even minored in sequential art because I wanted to write my own comic books.

I'm always looking for an opportunity to grow my 2D art skills because I know that they still need a lot of work and I'm excited to learn some more from this class.

The Goo Man Character

For this assignment we were given the freedom to choose what to work on for our next project, I chose a slime character based on a concept ...
